Zanzibar is an archipilago made of Zanzibar and Pemba Islands, several islets. It is located in the India Ocean about 25 miles of the Tanzania coast and six degrees South Equator. Zanzibar Island known as locally as unguja is only 60 miles long and 25 miles wide, ocuupying a total area approximately 650 square miles. It is charactarized by beautiful sandy beaches with fringed coral reef and the magic of history Stone town said to be the only functioning ancient town in East Africa.
There are no large animal in Zanzibar, and forest areas such as Jozani are in hibited by Red colobus monkeys, bush pigs, small antelop and civet. Various spices of mangoo can also be found on this Island. There is wide variety of birdlife and a number of butterflies in rural ares. The coral reef are saround the East Cost are rich in Marine diversity and make Zanzibar an Ideal location in snorkeling, diving and game fishing.
Zanzibar people have an incredible mixture of ethnic backgrounds. Indicative of a colourful history. Islam the dominal religion practiced by most local on the Island. The Islanders speak Swahili language which is spoken extensively in East Africa. Many believe that the purist form of the languege is spoken in Zanzibar as it is the birth place of Swahili.
Zanzibar is an Island state within the United Republic of Tanzania, and has own semiautonomous Government.
